The Loss of wildflowers redress the balance. There is a chance to do our bit to redress the balance of nature that has been so totally upset over the last 25 years. The destruction has been devastating. Did you know that 50% of our ancient woodlands have been destroyed, 50% of our fens and wetlands, 80% of our downland sheep grazing and 95% of our wildflower meadows. Although a few square metres on our small gardens may not seem significant, when you add all the many thousands of small gardens together they total a very significant area. It is reckoned there are over a million acres! Even more important is that it can create wildlife oases or sanctuaries in a particular area. This might be in he middle of a city or, just as important, in the countryside surrounded by destructive, intensive mono-crop farming. Creating a wildflower area in your garden can be fun and results in an increase in butterflies, bees, birds and other wildlife. Redressing the balance of nature is not only a pleasure to see, we can let nature help take control of pests and disease in the garden, the natural way.
