The covers of chocolate boxes and fantasy gardens of the Chelsea flower show so often depict the quiet but colourful charms of the English cottage garden. While many modern varieties are genetically engineered brash double flowering giants, the many colourful old fashioned varieties much loved by wildlife and generations before us are all but forgotten. There are many plants to choose from, all easy to grow from seed. Limnanthes douglasii or Poached Egg Flower is a must for every garden as it is very good at attracting and feeding valuable insects such as hoverflies. Tagetes patula is a colourful marigold that keeps other plants healthy. Research has proved they kill nematodes and discourage wireworms and other soil pests. Some Country Garden Flowers and ornamental grasses can give the added bonus of seed heads for winter pleasure, loved by birds.
